Joe Biggs was a butcher (屠夫). His shop was in a village in one of the most beautiful parts of southern England . He worked in it for many years while his father was there. Then, when his father reached the age of 65, he stopped working in the shop. Joe was alone in it, so he had to work harder.
Joe worked five and a half day a week. His shop shut at one o’clock on Thursday, and it was shut the whole of Sunday. Saturdays were the busiest days.
Joe had a big refrigerator (冰箱)in his shop, but he tried not to buy too much meat at a time.
One Thursday a woman came into the shop at five minutes to one. “I’m sorry I’m very late,” she said, “but some people have just telephoned to say that they are going to come to dinner tonight, and I need some more meat.”
Joe only had one piece of good meat in the shop. He had sold all the rest earlier in the day. He took the piece out and said to the woman. “This is £7.15.”
“That piece is too small,” the woman answered. “Haven’t you got anything bigger?”
Joe went into the room behind his shop, opened the refrigerator, put the piece of meat into it, took it out again and shut the door of the refrigerator with a lot of noise. Then he brought the piece of meat back to the woman and said, “This piece is bigger and more expensive. It’s £9.30.”

If you go into the forest with friends, stay with them always. If you don’t, you may get lost. If you really get lost, this is what you should do. Sit down and stay where you are. Don’t try to find your friends-let them find you by staying in one place.
There is another way to help your friends or other nearby people to find you. Give them a signal by shouting or whistling (打口哨) three times. Stop. Then shout or whistle three times. Any signal given three times is a call for help.
Keep up the shouting or whistling always three times together. When people hear you, they will know that you are not just making noise for fun. They will let you know that they have heard your signal. They will give two shouts, two whistles or two gun shots (枪声). When someone gives a signal, it is an answer to a call for help.
If you don’t think that you will get help before night comes, try to make a little house — cover up the holes with branches(树枝) with lots of leaves. Make yourself a soft bed with leaves and grass.
What should you do if you get hungry or need drinking water? You would have to leave your little branch house to look for a river. Don’t just walk away. Pick off small branches and drop them as you walk so that you can find your way back.
The most important thing to do when you are lost is — stay in one place.

Fire can help people in many ways. But it can be very dangerous. Fire can heat water, warm houses, give light and cook. But fire can burn things, too. It can burn trees, houses, animals or people. Sometimes big fire can burn forests.
Nobody knows for sure how peole began to use fire. But there are many interesting stories about the first time a man or a woman started a fire. One story from Australia tells about a man very, very long time ago. He went up to the sun by a rope (绳子) and brought fire down.
Today people know how to make a fire with matches (火柴). Children sometimes like to play with them. But matches can be very dangerous. One match can burn a piece of paper, and then it might burn a house. A small fire can become a big fire very fast. Fire kills many people every year. So you must be careful with matches. You should also learn to put fires. Fires need oxygen (氧气). Without oxygen they will die. Cover a fire with water, sand or sometimes with your coat. This keeps the air away from a fire and kills it. Have you ever had an embarrassing(尴尬的)experience? Last week we asked readers to tell us about embarrassing experiences. We received thousands of letters! Here is a selection.
Tony:
My most embarrassing experience happened when I had just left university. I had just started teaching in a Liverpool secondary school. One morning my alarm clock didn‘t ring. I woke up at half past eight and school began at nine. I quickly washed, dressed, jumped into my car and rushed to school. When I arrived, the students had already gone into class. I didn‘t go to the office, but went straight into class. After two or three minutes the students began laughing, and I couldn‘t understand why! Suddenly I looked down and understood. I had put on one black shoe and one brown shoe!
Henry:
The most embarrassing experience I‘ve ever had, happened two years ago. After seeing a film, my wife and I had lunch in our favourite restaurant in town. Then we decided to take a walk along the street. The street was very busy and we started holding hands. Suddenly my wife saw a dress that she liked in a shop window, and stopped. I started looking at some watches in the next window. After a minute or two I reached for my wife‘s hand. There was a loud scream, and a woman slapped my face. I hadn‘t taken my wife‘s hand. I‘d taken the hand of a complete stranger!
James:
My wife and I had decided to buy a new house, and I‘d made an appointment to see our bank manager. I‘d never met him before. I went into town in my car and I was lucky enough to find a parking space outside the bank. I‘d just started reversing(倒车) into the space when another car made its way into it. I was irritated! I opened my window and shouted at the man in the car. He ignored me and walked away. It took me twenty minutes to find another place. As soon as I had parked the car, I rushed back to the bank. I was ten minutes late for my appointment. I went to the manager‘s office, knocked and walked in. The manager was sitting behind his desk. He was the man who had taken my parking space!

Roosegaarde, an artist and designer from Dutch has thought of a device(装置). He hopes it will make Beijing‘s sky clear again and help the people with masks breathe fresh air again in Beijing.
An electromagnetic field(电磁场) will pull the dirty particles in the air to the ground, and then they can be easily cleaned.
Roosegaarde says, 'It‘s like when you have a balloon which has static electricity(静电) and your hair goes toward it. Smog happens the same way as the hair.'
His workplace has reached an agreement with the Beijing government to test the technology in one of the capital‘s parks. Beijing‘s skies are regularly covered by grey smog. Serious cases of air pollution are often reported in Beijing. Roosegaarde says an indoor test has already shown it works well and he is confident of the results. With the help of a team of scientists and engineers, he is sure that the device can be worked outside.
'Beijing is a very good place to test the device because the smog in Beijing is quite low and there‘s not so much wind.' says Roosegaarde. 'We‘ll be able to make the air pure but the most difficult thing is to remove the smog. As a result, you can see the sun again.'
Roosegaarde also reminds us that his aim is not only to give a plan to solve Beijing‘s dirty air pollution but also to make people pay attention to the environment problem. He adds, 'This is not the real answer for smog. The real answer to do with it is clean cars, different industry and different lifestyles. ' However, he hopes the project will make the citizens realize the differences between clean air and smog-filled air.
33. The device works by_______.
A helping keep the particles out with more masks
B. pulling particles to the ground with an electromagnetic field
C. absorbing hair with a balloon with static
D. creating clean air and letting it out into the sky
34. What does Roosegaarde use his device for?
A To make smog. B. To make the air clean
C. To make static electricity. D. To make Beijing‘s parks beautiful.
35. After reading the passage, we can know_______.
A the device doesn‘t work well indoors
B. the people with masks can breathe fresher air
C. Beijing government agreed to test the device
D. clean cars aren‘t helpful to the environment in Beijing
36. Roosegaarde hopes people in Beijing can_______.
A pay attention to air pollution and solve the problem finally
B. invent more devices to clean the smog in Beijing
C. drive modern cars and try different lifestyles
D. realize how serious the pollution they‘re facing is

They may also have shorter lives than those born in autumn Scientists believe many of the differences can be explained by the mother‘s exposure to sunlight in pregnancy(怀孕). Sunlight helps lead to the production of Vitamin D in the body. The lack of this in the first months of life may have a bad effect on mental and physical health.
Vitamin D, called the 'sunshine vitamin', is known to help regulate(调节) thousands of genes during development, according to a study of more than two million people. So Vitamin D has a good effect on health This study showed that people born from April to June had slightly shorter lives than those born in October, November or December. Similar studies in the USA showed that people born in autumn lived about 160 days longer than those born in spring.
Professor Russell Foster, an Oxford University neuroscientist on seasonal biology, said the conclusions were surprising and interesting. He added, 'These are small effects but they are very, very clear. I am not giving voice to star signs and they are just for fun. But it is true that we are affected by our season of birth.'
37.A baby‘s season of birth doesn‘t affect its_______.
A health B height C length of life D. mind
38. According to the passage,_______ can help people get Vitamin D.
A. enough sleep B. enough sunlight
C fresh air D. suitable seasons
39. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. People born in spring may not be in good health.
B. Children born under Aquarius are cleverer than those born under Libra.
C. Professor Russell Foster is interested in star signs and believes in them
D. People born in May will live longer than those born in October.
40. What does the passage mainly tell us?
A. People can know the length of life by star sign.
B. Women should choose to give birth to children in spring.
C A child‘s season of birth has some effect on him or her.

Like clockwork, nearly every fourth February includes one extraday. February 29th, otherwise known as Leap Day, isn't exactly a holiday.Instead, it's there to keep your calendar consistent with the earth's rotation(旋转)around the sun.
According to History, com,Roman emperor Julius Caesar is the "father” of Leap Year. Until he camealong, people used a 355-day calendar, which was 10. 25 days shorter than thesolar year, Roman officials were supposed to add an extra month every now and thento keep the seasons exactly where they should be. But that didn't work out allthat well. When special occasions started shifting into different seasonsaround 45 BCE, Caesar consulted with astronomers and decreed(下令)that the empire should usea 12-month, 365- day calendar, which he named after himself, Caesar’s Juliancalendar included a Leap Day every four years.
Though Leap Day keeps your calendar in line with the earth'srotation around the sun, it causes a different kind of problem for leapsters. When should these February 29th babies celebrate their birthdays during theother three-quarters of their lives? Some party on February 28th, while othersprefer a two-day celebration that spans the last day of February and the firstday of March.
Leap Day can be a nuisance in the legal system. In 2006, acourt in Massachusetts was deckling whether criminal John Melo could bereleased a day early since his 10-year sentence included a Leap Day. In thecase, the judge decided that since the man was sentenced to prison for years, not days, Leap Day didn't make a bit of difference.
Though a few timekeepers have pushed for calendars that don’tinclude Leap Day, almost all astronomers and societies agree that Leap Day isthe best method to keep the calendar on track.
8. Why was the Leap Day created?
A. To create special occasions.
B. To honor Emperor Julius Caesar.
C. To keep pace with solar year.
D.To keep track of all the seasons.
9.What is the problem with the birthday celebration of February 29thbabies?
A. It is sometimes delayed.
B. It lasts atleast two days.
C. It has to beheld every other year.
D. It may takeplace on different dates.
10.What does theunderlined word "nuisance" in Paragraph 4 mean?
A.Joke B.Topic. C. Trouble D. Mistake.
11. What is the attitude of mostastronomers towards Leap Day?
A. Critical B. SupportiveC.Doubtful D. Cautious

Scientists have developed a new type ofsmart bandage(绷带)that can signal the type of bacterial(细菌的)infection it's protecting, just like atraffic light, as well as release the right type of drugs on demand. Thetraffic light system works just like this: Green means no bacteria or a lowconcentration of bacteria, yellow means drug-sensitive (DS) bacteria responsive to standardantibiotics(抗生素)and causes antibiotic release, and redmeans drug-resistant (DR) bacteria that need extra help to bewiped out.
In testing the bandage on mice, theresearch team was able to successfully treat both DS and DR infections usingthe new method. However, the common methods of sensing resistance are limitedby time, the requirement for professional personnel, and expensive instruments. Moreover, the abuse of antibiotics causes the accelerated process of bacterialresistance.
It's easy to see how a simple bandageand light could overcome some of these limitations. Treatment doesn't have towait for a doctor to make a diagnosis, and the bandage can get the right sortof drugs applied at the earliest opportunity. What's more, the person wearingthe bandage gets real-time feedback on what's happening with the infection, ifthere's an infection at all. The researchers say it offers numerous benefitsover existing treatments that make use of light, including photodynamic therapyor PDT.
We've been seeing quite a few upgradesto the traditional bandage in recent years, thanks to advances in science—like the nanofibre mesh that attractsbacteria and draws some of it out, speeding up the healing process. Thenthere's the novel bandage for treating bums, which stops bacteria frommultiplying and lowers the risk of infection.
The more work that a bandage can dowhile it's protecting a wound, the better. Efforts to improve bandages continueand now we've got a bandage that not only releases antibiotics, but also tellsthe patient exactly what's going on too.
12.What is the smart bandage mainlydesigned to do?
A.Avoid the use of antibiotics.
B.Clear out harmful bacteria.
C.Detect bacterial infections.
D.Increase treatment options.
13.What is the advantage of the smartbandage?
A.It saves much time and cost.
B.It removes the risk of infection.
C.It prevents the bacterial resistance.
D.It improves doctor-patientrelationship.
14.What can be inferred from the lasttwo paragraphs?
A.Traditional bandages are out of usenow.
B.More smart bandages will be developed.
C.Progress in science calls for moreresearch.
D.People are urged to study medicalscience.
15.What does the text focus on?
A.A successful test on mice.
B.A colourchanging bandage
C.Sensing drug-resistant bacteria.
D.Preventing abuse of antibiotics.

As for the later quiz, the results weresimilar. Students with handwritten notes were able to remember and stillunderstand the concepts of the lecture after a week had passed. Theseparticipants were also more open to understanding new ideas. 20

Look,Listen,Can't you see? 等暗示词时,说明后面谓语动词的动作正在发生,该动词应用现在进行时。
在英语中,并不是所有的动词都要使用正在进行时。例如一些表示状态和感觉的动词,一般不用进行时态,而是用一般现在时表示。
