It goes without saying that many Western wedding customs are completely different from those of Asian

cultures. Some are so rooted in history that many Westerners have no idea whether they even exist.

Traditionally, June has been the most popular month for people to get married. One reason is that June 1 was the date of an ancient Roman festival celebrating the marriage of the god Jupiter and his wife Juno. Another reason will likely. astonish you. Centuries ago, taking a bath was not as common as it is today.

Some people took a bath only once a year, typically in May. Since June was a time most wedding guests would not be too smelly, that month was preferred.

Another wedding custom is for the bride to "wear something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue. "Having something old is said to protect the newlyweds' future baby, while the new item shows optimism for the future. Meanwhile, something borrowed is meant to bring good luck, and something blue is a promise of being faithful. Lesser known is the fact that the bride is also supposed to have a sixpence in her shoe for prosperity(兴旺)。 Interestingly, in Sweden, brides are given two coins before getting married-one gold from her mother and the other silver from her father-also to put in her shoes. These fascinating customs show just how important certain wedding traditions are in Western cultures.

Starring Jackson Yee and Zhou Dongyu, the film follows an outstanding candidate for the national college entrance exam Chen Nian, who meets teenage hooligan(小混混) Liu Beishan at a sad situation. Liu was abandoned by his parents and dropped out of school at 13. He tries to protect Chen from school violence. The two form a strong relationship, and support each other as they grow up in a difficult environment. But before they take the exam, Chen accidentally kills a classmate who bullies(欺凌) her at school and Liu tries to protect her by taking the blame.

Talking about why he chose to star in the movie, Yee said that he was attracted by the theme of teenage bullying. “Beyond the problem of school violence, the film also forthrightly reflects on the mental growth of youth,” he told Global Times .

Any kind bullying is painful, but it’s often unrecognized that many bullies face mental problems of their own—either at home or at school—and look for ways to take their emotions out on others. In other words, bullies are the weak ones, not their victims.

Often the easiest targets are those who seem to be the weakest: the nicest or quietest people. Or they pick on people who stand out from others. “Anything out of the norm can make you a target---anything that brings undue attention to yourself,” US high school teacher Jeff Ward told The Daily Universe newspaper.

A group of second-year college students have discovered hidden writing on a page from a book from the 1500s, using a special camera system they built.

Surprisingly, finding hidden writing on very old documents isn’t all that unusual. In fact, there’s even a special name for documents like this: a palimpsest (再生羊皮纸卷).

Long ago, writing was done on parchment — thin, dried animal skins specially prepared for writing. But parchment wasn’t easy to make and wasn’t cheap. So it became common to erase the old writing off a parchment and then reuse it for another piece of writing. That’s what creates a palimpsest.

The writing erased off the parchment can’t be seen directly, but scientists have learned ways to use special lighting to reveal the original writing. But it’s unusual for young college students to discover palimpsests.

We had a military training for a whole week in late August after stepping into our new senior high school. The military coaches were all strict with us. Frankly speaking, we all felt very tired, and even had pains in our legs. However, we all persisted in practising, and felt satisfied with ourselves eventually.

In the morning we arrived at the playground in lines on time. Then you could hear our military coaches shout at the top of their voices“Stand at attention”, “Stand at ease”,“Tum left”,“March”,“Run…”, All the students were practicing carefully. Exhausted as we were, none of us asked to have a rest, none of us complained, none of us wanted to drop out. Under the blazing sun, despite high temperature and thirst, we stood still for an hour with sweat dripping down from our faces all the time.

In the moonlight, we played games heartily, bursting into laughter now and then. On the grass, divided into two groups, we competed to sing encouraging military songs in high spirits one after another. At the meeting, hearing their moving speech, we felt regretful for wasting time before. At that time we realized we should have been grateful to our parents and teachers, with tears in our eyes. And we all made up our minds to study harder. On the afternoon of the last day, our principal sang high praise for our behaviour, and encouraged us to keep this persistent spirit in future.
