Violet Shouse of Tulsa, Oklahoma, is a little girl with a big heart. She may only be 4 years old, but her giving spirit is beyond her years, especially when it comes to people in need. In November, she held a weekend bake sale and managed to raise hundreds of dollars! Even more impressive, she didn’t keep a penny of it for herself.
Giving comes naturally to Violet, as her family does voluntary work with Community Resource Bank. One day, the little girl saw a woman asking for money. She turned to her mom Berkeley and asked why. “I explained that she didn’t have food or a home,” Berkeley said. Violet wanted to help the woman and other people in her situation, so in October, she baked and sold rainbow bread to raise money for their local food bank. She not only helped buy 10 pounds of chicken for hungry families, but she was also recognized in the Kennedy Center’s Small Works Project for her act of kindness!
Then, in November, she set her sights even higher by selling baked goods in front of her house. After raising a total of $625, Violet put the money in an envelope and took it to the Community Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma, where she handed it to CEO Lori Long. According to Long, the donation will pay for more than 2,400 meals! “The work that she put in and wanting to come down and present it in person with her handwritten envelope is very special,” Long said.

Edinburgh Zoo’s giant pandas may have to return to China next year because of financial pressures(财务压力) brought on by COVID-19. It costs £1 million a year to lease Yang Guang and Tian Tian from Beijing. But the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland, which runs the zoo, had to close for three months in the summer, leading to a £2 million loss for the year.
The society’s chief executive, David Field, said the charity would have to seriously consider every possible saving including its giant panda contract. Mr Field said, “We have done all we can to protect our charity by taking a government loan, letting staff have a holiday where possible, reducing jobs where necessary and starting a fundraising activity. The support that we have received from our members and animal lovers has helped to keep our doors open and we are very grateful.”
The zoo couldn’t apply for the Government’s zoo fund, which was aimed at smaller zoos. Mr Field added, “We have to seriously consider every possible saving and this includes assessing our giant panda contract and the cost of their daily care. At this stage, it is too soon to say what the answer will be. We will be discussing next steps with our colleagues in China over the coming months.”

Even in the first few months of life, children begin to experiment with language. Young babies make sounds that imitate(模仿)the tones and rhythms of adult talk; they “read" gestures and facial expressions, and they begin to associate sounds frequently heard — words — with their objects in the mind. They delight in listening to familiar rhymes, play along in games such as peek-a-boo and pat-a-cake, and play with objects such as board books and alphabet blocks in their play. From these remarkable beginnings children learn to use a variety of symbols.
In the course of gaining facility with these symbol systems, children acquire through interactions with others the insight that specific kinds of marks — print ——also can represent meanings. At first children will use the physical and visual cues (提示)surrounding print to determine what something says. But as they develop an understanding of the alphabetic principle, children begin to process letters, translate them into sounds, and connect this information with a known meaning. Although it may seem as though some children acquire these understandings magically or on their own, studies suggest that they are the beneficiaries of considerable, though playful and informal, adult guidance and instruction.
Considerable diversity in children's oral and written language experiences occurs in these years. In home and child care situations, children go through many different resources and types and degrees of support for early reading and writing. Some children may have ready access to a range of writing and reading materials, while others may not; some children will observe their parents writing and reading frequently, others only occasionally.

Last year the media hit the headlines for producing a short Martin Scorsese directed film that will star heavyweights Robert De Niro, Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt. The actors were reported to be cashing whopping paychecks for their work, with Pitt alleged to have taken home $13m, for the two day shooting. The film will be shown at the opening of Melco Crown’s newest James Packer-owned, movie themed resort “Studio City” in Macau and be used to support the company’s expansion in Asia.
It was said last year that the company had invested $254 million in Warner Bros movies, including The Lego Movie , which was a worldwide hit. They recently moved into the office that used to belong to the original king of cool and head of the Rat Pack , Frank Sinatra.
Against great difficulty, a female runner from Kenya came third at the 2015 Austin Marathon Sunday by crawling on her hands and knees across the finish line.
Hyvon Ngetich, 29, was leading the pack of top female runners at the 23-mile mark, but with victory in sight, the Kenyan athlete started to feel tired. By the time the finish line came into view, Ngetich’s body began to shut down, but the determined runner was not ready to give up.
