A perfectly preserved wreck that has lain unnoticed in the icy Baltic Sea for over 500 years has finally been confirmed. The European ship was first observed in 2009, when a sonar exploration by the Swedish Maritime Administration (SMA) indicated a large object in the area. However, it was not until early 2019 that researchers from Soton and MMT found evidence of the sunken ship using underwater robotic cameras.

When the team observed the pictures of the 60-foot-long shipwreck, they were surprised to discover it was 99 percent complete. The scientists considered that the wreck's good condition is due to its place in the Baltic Seabed, where the oxygen levels are low. Oxygen is key to most ocean life's survival. Therefore, such an environment where the shipwreck stays reduces or completely removes the creatures that feed on rotting wood.

So although this ship is contemporary to the times of Christopher Columbus, it shows a remarkable level of preservation after 500 years at the bottom of the sea. Dr. Pacheco-Ruiz, who led the MMT effort, said,“It's almost like it sank yesterday. It's a truly astonishing sight."

There's no such thing as being born “good at languages”. However, there are people who learn languages well, but that has nothing to do with them being naturally good at it. ___16___

Good language learners are actively involved in their learning process.  They do not expect to learn English only by sitting in the classroom. ___17___ They are organized and active. They look for creative ways both inside and outside the classroom to try out what they have learned.

Good language learners knows that language is used to communicate.  They pay attention to meaning. They have good techniques to practice listening, speaking, reading and writing. They push themselves to speak and try to become fluent. ___18___

___19___ It may not be easy at first but thinking in English is worth cultivating as a vital skill that will improve all areas of your language learning. To help you think in English, carry on a dialogue with yourself in English when walking along, sitting on a bus, or taking a break from other studies. Use English whenever and wherever you can.

There is a restaurant in my Maine town that has done little to update itself over the past 80 years. This is part of its charm, as is the wooden phone booth that sits neglected (忽略) in the age of the cellphone. Ah, the phone booth. We need it now more than ever.

For me it symbolizes that phone calls were once private affairs, even if the information being shared was not sensitive in any way. It was simply assumed that a phone conversation was meant for two people, and two people only.

Growing up in the 1960s, we had only phone in the house. As a kid, I didn’t get, or make many calls because all my friends live within earshot and I could just yell out the window if I wanted their attention. I do, however, remember answering the phone, asking for the identity of the caller, and then handing the phone to my mom. She’d take it, say “Hello, Mrs…one moment please,” and then as she placed her hand over the receiver, she turned to me, and directed, “This is for me. Why don’t you go outside and play?”

There’s a small brick house I visit from time to time. It’s not the house that is special, but rather the person who lives inside.

I met Miss C about 45 years ago when she was my sister’s kindergarten teacher. I remember looking into her classroom wishing I was her student. Miss C created a safe place where we could be whatever we wanted to be in that moment. My parents reassured (安抚) me I could start school when I was 4. Though, when I turned 4 in the spring, I couldn’t understand why I had to wait until September.  For as long as I can remember, I’ve wanted to be a teacher. When I graduated, I couldn’t wait to invite Miss C to my classroom. She arrived one day, and I saw joy on my students’ faces singing the same songs I sang with her as a child. As a new teacher, I marveled at (对……感到惊奇) how she connected with children. For years, Miss C volunteered in my classroom.   Over the years we have shared in each other’s ups and downs. She asks me for updates about my family and friends, and she tells me about hers.   I am here for her now as the time to sell her house is near. I bring up boxes from her basement. We go through every painting a student has given her, every thank-you note a parent has written and her teaching aids (教具).

Killer whales, or orcas, are known for their severe attacks on sea animals but they have never posed a threat to humans. However, since late July, the normally social animals have been intentionally attacking sailboats off the coasts of Spain and Portugal.

The strange behavior first surfaced on July 29, 2020, when a 46-foot boat was repeatedly attacked for almost an hour by nine orcas, causing the boat to rotate(旋转) 180 degrees and having its engine switched off. Since then, over 30 more similar incidents have been reported. On September 23, 2020, Spain's government banned boats of less than 50 feet in length from sailing in the 60-mile stretch of the Atlantic coastline between Ferrol and the Estaca de Bares Cape, where the attacks have been occurring.

Researchers across the world are trying to explain the orcas' behavior. Some believe it could be a result of the overfishing of the bluefish tuna - the orcas' primary food source -which has left the area's killer whales starving and unable to feed their babies. "I saw them look at boats carrying fish. I think they know humans are somehow related to food shortages, "says Ken Balcomb, senior scientist at the Center for Whale Research in Washington, US A. The environmentalists believe the sudden increase in boat traffic and fishing activities, after months of absence due to restrictions on human activity last spring, could also be contributing to the agitation.
