It is a city swallowed by the Mediterranean Sea and buried in sand and mud for more than 1,200 years. But now archeologists are unearthing the mysteries of Heracleion, uncovering amazingly wellpreserved artifacts(手工艺品) that tell the story of an ancient port.

Known as Heracleion to the ancient Greeks and Thonis to the ancient Egyptians, the city was rediscovered in 2000 by French underwater archaeologist Dr. Franck Goddio and a team from the European Institute for Underwater Acheology (IEASM) after a fouryear geophysical survey. The ruins of the lost city were found 30 feet under the surface of the Mediterranean Sea in Aboukir Bay, near Alexandria.

Many major discoveries were made at ThonisHeracleion during a 13year excavation(挖掘). Exciting archeological finds help describe an ancient city that was not only an important international trade center but possibly an important religious center.

Research now suggests that ThonisHeracleion served as a busy trade port between the Mediterranean and the Nile.

So far, 64 ancient shipwrecks(失事船残骸)have been unearthed from the mud of the bay. Other findings include gold coins and weights(秤砣) from Athens (which have never before been found at an Egyptian site). Researchers have also uncovered a variety of religious artifacts in the sunken city, including 16foot stone sculptures thought to have decorated the city's central temple.

Experts have wondered at the variety of artifacts found and have been equally impressed by how well preserved they are. Professor Sir Barry Cunliffe, a University of Oxford archeologist taking part in the excavation, said, “By lying untouched and protected by sand on the sea floor for centuries they are well preserved.”

But despite all the excitement over the excavation, one mystery about ThonisHeracleion remains unsolved: How did it sink? Goddio's team suggests the weight of large buildings may have caused the city to sink in_the_wake_of an earthquake.

1. Which of the following is NOT true of ThonisHeracleion?

A. It has a history of about 1,200 years.

B. It was buried undersea for over 1,200 years.

D. It was rediscovered by Franck Goddio.

2. The researchers are sure that ThonisHeracleion used to be an international ______.

A. political center B. trade center

C. cultural center D. religious center

3. We can infer that in ancient times ______.

A. many temples were built in Heracleion

B. ThonisHeracleion was a lonely island

C. ThonisHeracleion was a poor city

D. many ships visited the Heracleion port

Ⅳ.阅读简答

While driving home from work, I always noticed an old man sitting by his front yard. He was usually *** oking or drinking and looked rather grumpy.

One day, while I was driving past him with my daughter, I decided to wave at him. Initially, when the old man noticed me waving at him, he looked a bit shocked. Then, I saw his hand go up and he waved back.

“Why did you wave at him?” my daughter asked. I told her that it's just an act of kindness that doesn't cost anything, and it gives both him and me a sense of joy. She responded by saying that she was a bit embarrassed to wave to a stranger, but next time she would try it as well.

Lucky for us, we live close to the old man, so we saw him rather often. Whenever we drove by, both of us would start waving at him and, pretty soon, the old man started waving at everyone who passed by his home. The old man, who used to be badtempered, now always wears *** iles on his face.

One day, my daughter's friend came to visit and she told my daughter that she saw this strange old man near our home who waved at her very kindly. She mentioned that she waved back at him, even though she didn't know him, and it felt really good.

Upon hearing this, my daughter told her friend the story of how all the waving began.

Her friend responded, “Tell your mom that's really cool!”

Inspired by all these positive ripples(涟漪), we decided to give our elder waving man a thankyou card, to express our gratitude for the warm feeling that he municates through his enthusiastic waves. And to thank him for sharing this simple joy with all who pass by his house.

This story teaches me just how much an act of kindness can be very natural and effortless, if you really want to do it. It shows us giving happiness benefits both the giver and receiver.

Sometimes it is a simple gesture that makes a big difference in someone's day.

Integrating(融为一体) the four main language skills (listening, reading, speaking, and writing) has showed to be very beneficial in the second language classroom. Study shows we __1__ use a single skill when municating, so it makes sense to __2__ more than one skill at a time.

There are several advantages for using an integrated approach. Not only are learners given the chance to interact in a __3__ way, but learners are also exposed to the richness and plexity(复杂性)of the language. __4__, with a separated approach, it is difficult to use language in a meaningful way. For __5__, when students practise only one skill at a time, such as speaking, it is meaningless, because they can not concentrate on just speaking while they are __6__ municating.

Another advantage to using an integrated approach is that students are more likely to be __7__ to learn a language if they are able to use it to interact, rather than to just have knowledge about the language. In this approach, language is treated as a __8__ of interaction, rather than an academic subject.

A third advantage of an integrated approach is that skill integration allows for __9__ in all main skills at the same time, which allows students to be able to use their strengths in order to help them grow in their weaknesses. In other __10__, if a student is particularly __11__ at reading, they may be able to use this skill to help them with listening or writing.

An integrated skills approach is obviously a more realistic approach to language learning, while a separated approach does not __12__ a meaningful understanding of language. Nor does it seem to be a motivating style to learning a foreign language.

Babies don't learn to talk just from hearing sounds. New research suggests they're lipreaders too.

Florida scientists discovered that starting around age 6 months, babies begin shifting from the eye gaze(注视)to studying mouths when people talk to them.

“In order to imitate you, the baby has to figure out how to shape their lips to make that particular sound they're hearing,” explains psychologist David Lewkowicz of Florida Atlantic University, who led the study. “It's an incredibly plex process.”

Apparently it doesn't take them too long to absorb the movements that match basic sounds. By their first birthdays, babies start shifting back to look you in the eye again — unless they hear the unfamiliar sounds of a foreign language. Then, they stick with lipreading a bit longer.

In the experiment, David Lewkowicz tested nearly 180 babies, groups of them at ages 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 months.

How? They showed videos of a woman speaking in English or Spanish to babies of English speakers. A device tracked where each baby was focusing his or her gaze and recorded how long the gaze lasted.

They found a dramatic shift in attention: When the speaker used English, the 4montholds gazed mostly into her eyes. The 6montholds spent equal amounts of time looking at the eyes and the mouth. The 8 and 10montholds studied mostly the mouth. At 12 months, attention started shifting back toward the speaker's eyes.

It makes sense that at 6 months, babies begin observing lip movement, Lewkowicz says, because that's about the time babies' brains gain the ability to control their attention rather than automatically look toward noise.

But what happened when these babies used to English heard Spanish? The 12montholds studied the mouth longer, just like younger babies. They needed the extra information to decipher (破译)the unfamiliar sounds.

“It's a pretty interesting finding,” says University of Iowa psychology professor Bob McMurray, who also studies baby speech development. The babies “know what they need to know about, and they're able to draw their attention to what's important at that point in language development.”

4. When babies are half one year old, what can they do?

A. They can control their attention.

Need some tips on learning English? We have some great ones for you this time and we're sure they will help you to learn English more easily and with more fun!

(1)Find something interesting about your English study. Why not watch your favourite film in English? You could also read the lyrics (歌词) of pop songs, or check out celebrity sites (名人网站) and learn more about your favorite basketball or football players.

(2)Read English texts as often as you can. This could be news, short stories or novels. Choose an interesting text that is not too difficult for you. Don't look up every new word — even without a dictionary you will understand a lot if you are interested in the topic. If you are a football fan, you won't have problems understanding an English article about football.

Also watch the news in Chinese and find English news about the same topics. Even if you don't understand every word in English, you will understand it as you already know what the text is about.

(3)Choose your favourite movie. Have paper and pen ready as you may want to write down useful words or phrases. Listening to your favourite English songs is another cool way. Read first and find out what the song is about. Pick some words or phrases that you would like to learn. A dictionary may also be useful.

(4)With your friends, you can repeat your English vocabulary, do your homework and help each other with English grammar. Maybe your friends have a better way of studying. Or, maybe you can give them cool advice!

(5)Set a target for each week or each month and give a reward for yourself if you can achieve it. For example, you can write: If I can do that, I will play my favorite puter games for half an hour; buy my favorite snack (Harry Potter books, etc.); visit the zoo; go to a concert.

Attitudes to AIDS Now

Most people say that the USA is making progress in fighting AIDS, but they don't know there's no cure and strongly disagree that “the AIDS epidemic(蔓延) is over,” a new survey finds.

The findings, released Thursday by the Kaiser Family Foundation, reassure activists who have worried that public concern about AIDS might disappear in light of recent news about advances in treatment and declines in deaths.

“While people are very optimistic about the advances, they're still realistic about the fact that there is no cure,” says Sophia Chang, director of HIV programs at the foundation.

The Kaiser survey, like a recent USA TODAY Gallup Poll, does find that the number of people ranking AIDS as the country's top health problem has fallen. In the Kaiser Poll, 38% say it's the top concern, down from 44% in a 1996 poll; in the Gallup Poll, 29% say AIDS in No.1, down from 41% in 1992 and 67% in 1987.

Other findings from Kaiser, which polled more than 1,200 *** s in September and October and asked additional questions of another 1,000 *** s in November:

52% say the country is making progress against AIDS, up from 32% in 1995.

52% say the government spends too little on AIDS.

86% correctly say AIDS drugs can now lengthen lives; an equal number correctly say that the drugs are not cures.

67% incorrectly say that AIDS deaths increased or stayed the same in the past year; 24% know deaths fell.

Daniel Zingale, director of AIDS Action Council, says, I'm encouraged that the American people are getting the message that the AIDS epidemic isn't over. I hope the decisionmakers in Washington are getting the same message…We have seen signs of placency.

1. What do activists worry about?

A. Recent news about AIDS is not true.

B. People may stop worrying about AIDS.

C. Deaths caused by AIDS may not decline.

D. Advances in AIDS treatment are too slow.

2. According to the passage, people's attitude toward the cure of AIDS is ______.

A. optimistic B. realistic

C. pessimistic D. hopeless

3. The Gallup Poll shows that the number of people ______.

A. who suffer from the worst disease — AIDS has fallen

B. who think AIDS threatens the countryside has fallen

C. who worry about AIDS and health problems has fallen

D. who think AIDS is the country's top health killer has fallen

4. According to the Kaiser Poll, which of the following is NOT correct?

A. The country is making progress against AIDS.

B. AIDS drugs still cannot save people's lives.

C. AIDS drugs can now make people live longer.

D. More and more people die of AIDS now.

5. The word “message” in the last paragraph means ______.

Ⅳ.阅读填空(每空不超过三个单词)

Experiencing bad dreams every night can be horrifying for anybody. Bad dreams can disturb the sleep and make a person feel stressed throughout the next day. That's why one should take steps to stop them as soon as they bee an everyday occurrence.

Before knowing how to get rid of bad dreams, we need to understand what can result in them. Researches have shown that when a person is under some sort of physical or mental stress, he is more likely to get bad dreams and disturbed sleep. So, to stop bad dreams, it's necessary to find out the causes of physical and mental stress in your life and remove these. For instance, if you're overworked, learn to take things slow. Don't be ambitious to the point that it starts affecting your health.

Besides, some trauma(损伤) that a person might have experienced recently or in the past which they're unable to get over can make the person suffer from bad dreams. Death of a very close family member is often seen to be the reason behind recurrent nigares. In such a case, taking therapy and dealing with the trauma is the only solution to stop bad dreams.

Eating fatty and highprotein foods in dinner is also known to cause bad dreams in some people. So, bad dreams occurring because of these reasons can be stopped if the diet is changed. Taking a light dinner of soups and salad is the best, both for the health and for stopping disturbed sleep in some cases.

Besides these, there are many other things a person can do to have a good night's sleep. For example, your bedroom should be the most fortable place in the world. So, get rid of all electronic gadgets including television. In addition, if you have negative thoughts, it can have side effects on the kind of dreams you have. So, from now on try to be a happy and positive person.Title: Bad Dreams

May I have your attention, please?

My topic today is about copying others' homework.

As we know, some students copy others' homework. On one hand, we students have to do masses of homework both at home and at school. Sometimes we do have some problems, which are too hard to work out. On the other hand, lazy and uninterested in their lessons, some students copy others' homework not only to finish the assignments but also please their teachers.

In a word, copying others' homework is a bad habit. For one thing, it's against the school rules. Being students, we should be honest and work hard. If we have difficulties, we can turn to teachers and clas *** ates for help. For another, copying others' homework too often, we will lose the ability that can help us to think.

Personally, it's for our own sake to study. We should try our best to gain knowledge. Let's take action to prevent such bad behavior from spreading.

Thank you for your attention.
